- Education: PhD, University of Toronto, 1998.
Sidnell's research intersects language structure, social interaction, and reflexive reanalysis, particularly in the context of language reform and revolutionary politics in 20th-century Vietnam. His work extends to the Caribbean, India, and North America, focusing on how linguistic practices mediate social hierarchies, ethical judgment, and cultural models.
Recent publications highlight trends in Vietnamese language reform, conversational repair, and register formation as tools for mass mobilization. These studies often bridge Marxist theory, interactional practices, and feminist sociolinguistics, examining asymmetries in communication labor.
