Jack Needleman

Jack Needleman is Professor of Health Policy and Management at UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and Associate Director of the UCLA Patient Safety Institute. He holds a Ph.D. in Public Policy from Harvard University and teaches health policy analysis, research design, and program evaluation.

His research examines how market forces and public policy impact healthcare quality and access, with recent focus on hospital staffing patterns and performance improvement. Key interests include:

• Nurse staffing impacts on patient outcomes
• Quality measurement development and implementation
• Healthcare market incentives and regulatory frameworks

Honors include the AcademyHealth Impact Award for research on nurse staffing, honorary Fellowship in the American Academy of Nursing, and election to the Institute of Medicine. He has led evaluations for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and advises national quality measurement organizations.
