JSC (Han) Wiskerke

Prof. JSC (Han) Wiskerke is a Professor and Chair of Rural Sociology at Wageningen University & Research, leading the Rural Sociology Group. His career spans roles as an assistant/associate professor, postdoctoral researcher, and coordinator of major EU-funded projects like ROBUST (Horizon 2020) and PUREFOOD (FP7). He holds a MSc in Plant Production (1992) and PhD in Rural Sociology (1997) from Wageningen University.

Research focuses on rural development, urban-rural relations, and sustainable food systems. Current projects include exploring urban-rural synergies and food provisioning dynamics. He has supervised 30+ PhD students and teaches courses on food sociology, rural development, and agro-food studies.

Key expertise areas include food policy, multifunctional agriculture, actor-network theory, and interdisciplinary research. He directs WASS and advises organizations like Greendish and SPN. His publications span books (e.g., Flourishing Foodscapes) and peer-reviewed articles on food systems and socio-ecological transitions.
