J.M. Fritzman is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Lewis & Clark College, part of the College of Arts & Sciences. He holds a PhD from Purdue University (1991) and a BA from Eastern Mennonite University (1977). His research focuses on German Idealism, Indian Philosophy, and the Philosophy of Mind. Notable works include a book on Hegel (Polity Press, 2014) and ongoing research on cosmopsychism.
Teaching Spring 2025 courses include Philosophy of Religion and 19th Century Philosophy (focusing on German Idealism). Fritzman has led overseas programs to India and published widely in journals. He collaborates frequently with students on interdisciplinary projects, such as exploring metaphysical grounding and comparative philosophy.
Active in academic outreach, he maintains professional links with institutions like the Society for Indian Philosophy and Religion. His personal interests include Indian cuisine and Bollywood films, reflecting his scholarly engagement with South Asian culture.
