J.L. Sturge is an Assistant Professor in the Interaction Design (IxD) group at the Department of Design, Production and Management, Faculty of Engineering Technology, University of Twente. His research focuses on healthcare design through a human-centred, geographically inspired lens, addressing healthcare transformation, citizen science, and at-home hospitalization practices. He supervises two PhD candidates and a postdoc researcher, and teaches in the Industrial Design Engineering program.
His expertise spans healthcare environments, transdisciplinary methodologies, and inclusive design. He co-founded Healthscapes, a platform connecting interdisciplinary researchers to improve health environment design through research dissemination and collaboration. Previously, he worked in the private sector as an evidence-based designer for healthcare facilities.
Current research projects include NWO-funded collaborations on health-tech literacy and gender-sensitive human-building interaction in healthcare settings. He actively contributes to design education and policy frameworks for socially sustainable environments.
