J.C.A. Stagg is a Professor and Editor of The Papers of James Madison at the University of Virginia. He holds a Ph.D. in History from Princeton University (1973), an M.A. (1969), and a B.A. (1967) from the University of Canterbury.

His research focuses on the political, diplomatic, and military history of the early American republic, particularly the War of 1812 and the Spanish borderlands. Recent publications include The Papers of James Madison: Retirement Series, vol. 3 (2016) and The War of 1812: Conflict for a Continent (2012). His work also addresses topics like U.S. Army discipline during the War of 1812 and comparative military recruitment.
