Dr. Robert Foley is a Professor of Defence Studies at King’s College London, affiliated with the Defence Studies Department within the School of Security Studies. His research focuses on German military thought in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly strategic and operational ideas influencing World War I outcomes, and on wartime learning and innovation in military organizations. He has held roles at the University of Liverpool and rejoined King’s in 2012 as a Reader before becoming Professor.
He leads the First World War Research Group, exploring military, diplomatic, and cultural aspects of the conflict, and contributes to the Sir Michael Howard Centre for the History of War. His major works include German Strategy and the Path to Verdun (2004), awarded the Gladstone Prize, and German Army in the First World War (2016). His research on organizational learning in armed forces integrates historical analysis with modern strategic studies, notably receiving the Moncado Prize for his 2011 article on German Army lessons from the Somme.
Dr. Foley supervises PhD students in First World War military thought, innovation, and strategic theory. His awards include the Gladstone Prize (2005) and Moncado Prize (2011). He is actively involved in academic networks, including the First World War Research Group and the Centre for German Transnational Relations, examining Germany’s geopolitical role.
