J. Roger Kurtz is Professor of English and Department Head of English and Philosophy at Drexel University, with joint affiliations in Africana Studies and the Center for Interdisciplinary Study. Office: 5016 MacAlister Hall, contact: jrk353@drexel.edu or 215.895.2446.
He holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from University of Iowa (1994) and specializes in postcolonial literatures, particularly East African literature, culture, and trauma theory. Publications explore connections between liberation movements and literature, Kenyan urban spaces, and African trauma narratives.
Publications focus on East African literary traditions with recurring examination of trauma, moral imagination, and linguistic decolonization. Recent scholarship emphasizes cultural identity in postcolonial contexts.
Honors include two Fulbright fellowships (Kenya, Ethiopia) and two NEH grants. Previously chaired departments at SUNY Brockport in English, Anthropology, and African/African American Studies.
