Abioseh Porter serves as Professor of English and Director of Africana Studies at Drexel University's College of Arts and Sciences, where he previously led the Department of English & Philosophy from 2002 to 2015 and founded the Journal of the African Literature Association (JALA) in 2007 after editing its predecessor since 1998.
His academic foundation includes a PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Alberta (1984) and a BA in English & French with Post Graduate Diploma in Education from Fourah Bay College, Sierra Leone.
Porter's research centers on African literary traditions, with deep expertise in Sierra Leonean post-conflict narratives, Francophone literary criticism, and postcolonial identity formation. His scholarship bridges Western and non-Western canons, examining how literature processes historical trauma and shapes cultural memory across West Africa, particularly through works analyzing civil war legacies and oral tradition evolution.
Analysis of his publications reveals consistent thematic focus on national reconciliation through literary expression, with recent works exploring Sierra Leone's socio-political landscape and tributes to foundational African literary figures, demonstrating enduring commitment to amplifying marginalized voices.
His accolades include the 2019 Harold M. Myers Award for Distinguished Service and 2017 African Literature Association Distinguished Member honor, alongside career recognition such as:
- Fulbright research fellowship (2019-2020) at Université Paul-Valéry III, France
- Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching (1991)
- Drexel's Most Dedicated Professor (2002) and Faculty Member of the Year (2002-2003)
As Africana Studies Director, Porter mentors emerging scholars and leads interdisciplinary initiatives examining diaspora experiences, while his Fulbright fellowship underscores international research impact through collaborations with French academic institutions.
The Africana Studies program under his leadership fosters cross-departmental partnerships and community engagement, advancing critical analysis of Black cultural production and social justice through curriculum development and public scholarship initiatives.
