J. Peter Gergen is a SUNY Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology at Stony Brook University, with a focus on developmental genetics and transcriptional regulation in Drosophila embryos.
His research centers on the Runt transcription factor, the founding member of the RUNX family, investigating its dual roles in gene activation and repression during segmentation, neurogenesis, and sex determination. Key findings include the discovery of DNA-binding-independent repression mechanisms and the functional distinction between establishment and maintenance phases of gene regulation.
Recent publications highlight studies on Runt cofactors like Hairless, NELF, and Groucho, with articles spanning transcriptional elongation, enhancer dynamics, and chromatin remodeling. Collaborative work explores evolutionary conservation of RUNX proteins and their implications in human diseases.
- Current lab members: Yasuno Iwasaki (Postdoc), Jennifer Shapp (Master's Student)
- Alumni: Includes 20+ former students and researchers now in academia, industry, and healthcare.
He has mentored numerous doctoral, master's, and undergraduate students, many of whom hold prominent positions in universities, research institutions, and medical fields.
