J. Otto Habeck is a Professor at the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Hamburg, since 2014. His career includes visiting professorships, such as at Tohoku University (2018), and coordinatorship at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology (2003-2014). His academic journey began with studies at Free University of Berlin and Humboldt University, followed by a PhD at University of Cambridge.
- Research Focus: Lifestyles, gender relations in indigenous communities, permafrost-affected land use, Siberian and Mongolian studies, urban spaces in Yakutsk and Novosibirsk.
- Current Projects: Lead Work Package 3 for the Horizon-2020 CHARTER project on Arctic environmental impacts and co-founded the 'Gender in the Arctic' research network.
Publications span edited volumes, journal articles on reindeer herding, urban anthropology, and post-Soviet cultural practices. He has convened workshops on topics like 'Permafrost and Indigenous Land Use' and 'Queering Indigeneity.'
