Priv.-Doz. Dr. Jörg Elis Hoffmann is a Senior Research Scientist (Akademischer Oberrat) and Lab Manager at the Department of Geochemistry, Hydrogeology, and Mineralogy, Freie Universität Berlin. His roles include managing TIMS and Clean Labs, teaching, and supervising students. Hoffmann holds a PhD (2011) and Habilitation (2020) from Universität Bonn and Universität Mainz, specializing in early Earth processes.
Research focuses on Archean mantle evolution, continental crust formation, and geochemical method development. Key projects include DFG grants (e.g., HO4794/4, HO4794/3) and collaborations with institutions like Universität Bochum and Universität Münster. Fieldwork spans South Africa, Greenland, and Cyprus, emphasizing ancient terranes like the Barberton Greenstone Belt and Isua supracrustal belt.
He advises numerous PhD and MSc students, including work on komatiites, sulfur cycling, and halogen geochemistry. Hoffmann is a prolific reviewer for journals like Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta and contributes to projects like SPP1833 ('Building a habitable Earth'). Courses taught include Geochronology, Plasma Mass Spectrometry, and Stratigraphy.
Publications span 66+ articles, with recent work on volatile cycling, mantle processes, and isotopic constraints on crustal evolution. His work bridges field geology, experimental geochemistry, and isotope analysis to unravel Earth’s earliest history.
