Dr. J. Christopher Schutz is a Professor and Chair of the History Department at Tennessee Wesleyan University, with additional roles as Honors Program Faculty and Co-Chair of the Diversity Council. He earned a Ph.D. in History from the University of Georgia, a Master’s degree from the University of North Carolina Charlotte, and a B.A. in Philosophy from Loyola University New Orleans.

Dr. Schutz specializes in 20th Century American History, particularly the African American Freedom Struggle, the American South, American social and cultural history of the 1960s and 1970s, and the history of Modern China. His research explores how racial dynamics, cultural shifts, and political activism shaped the trajectory of American history. He has authored works such as Jackie Robinson: An Integrated Life and is completing a manuscript on the Charlotte Three Trial, which examines the decline of the Civil Rights Movement through a controversial 1972 case.
His teaching portfolio spans courses like The Reagan Revolution, History of American Cinema, and History of Modern China, blending historical analysis with contemporary social issues like the Black Lives Matter movement. These courses emphasize race, justice, and the evolution of political ideologies in the 20th century.
