معرفی
Professor Anton Zensus is a German astrophysicist serving as Director at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn and Honorary Professor at the University of Cologne since 2005. Internationally recognized for his leadership in capturing the first image of a black hole, Zensus founded and chaired the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration.
Research Expertise
Zensus specializes in observing distant galaxies and black holes using Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), a technique that connects radio telescopes worldwide to create a virtual Earth-sized telescope. His team's work has produced groundbreaking images of black holes in Messier 87 (2019) and the Milky Way (2022), representing major scientific milestones viewed by over a billion people worldwide.
Academic Background
- Doctorate in Physics, University of Münster (1984)
- Diploma in Physics, University of Münster (1982)
- Researcher at Caltech and NRAO (1985-1991)
- Director at Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (1997-present)
Scientific Recognition
Zensus has received numerous prestigious awards for his contributions to astrophysics:
- Karl Schwarzschild Medal (2024)
- Tycho Brahe Medal (2023)
- Breakthrough Prize for Fundamental Physics (2019)
- Multiple international awards for the Event Horizon Telescope work
Leadership and Mentorship
Beyond research, Zensus actively mentors young scientists through doctoral supervision and the Elisabeth Schiemann Kolleg for female junior researchers. He serves on multiple international advisory boards including the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration Board and European VLBI Network Board. As a systemic supervisor, he supports scientific leaders in developing effective leadership approaches while coordinating major research networks like RadioNet and OPTICON-RADIONET PILOT.
