J. Andrew Smith serves as Assistant Professor of Practice in Music Technology within the Department of Music at The University of Texas at San Antonio's College of Liberal and Fine Arts. An Atlanta-born educator, composer, and vocalist (b. 1992), his work explores intersections of acousmatic sound, live performance, and improvisation through autobiographical narratives.
His research centers on electronic music composition where timbre, gesture, and spatial elements emerge from personal narratives interwoven with poetry and fiction. Smith investigates modernizing acousmatic praxis—evidenced by his dissertation Utterances; Approaching a New Acousmatic Praxis—while emphasizing performer agency through structured improvisation. His creative output features visceral vocal experimentation and electroacoustic works performed at SEAMUS conferences, SPLICE Festival, and PASIC.
- Finalist, ASCAP/SEAMUS Student Commission Competition (2022) for Arbitrary/Peremptory
Smith teaches electronic music and composition courses, having previously instructed at Bowling Green State University, Owens Community College, and University of North Texas. His collaborative projects include readings with Spektral Quartet and Toledo Symphony Orchestra, alongside mentorship under composers Jon Nelson and Panayiotis Kokoras.
