J. Andrew Overman serves as the Harry M. Drake Distinguished Professor in the Humanities and Fine Arts at Macalester College, where he holds a faculty position in the Department of Classics. His scholarly focus centers on the intersection of religion, culture, and ethnicity within the Greco-Roman world, supported by active archaeological fieldwork in the Middle East.
His educational foundation includes:
- BA from St. John’s University
- BD from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland
- PhD from Boston University
Professor Overman’s research explores ancient religious systems through archaeological and historical lenses, emphasizing Judaism and Christianity’s evolution in the Roman Empire, cross-cultural interactions, and diaspora communities. His leadership of the Omrit excavation in Israel—a Roman temple site—provides critical insights into religious practices and material culture of the ancient Middle East, directly integrating students into hands-on field research each summer.
He mentors undergraduates through the Omrit Field School, offering immersive archaeological training while advancing studies of Greco-Roman religious architecture. This project exemplifies his commitment to experiential learning and collaborative research.
The Omrit dig operates as a multidisciplinary team involving Macalester students and international collaborators, focusing on uncovering stratigraphic layers and artifacts from the Roman period to reconstruct ritual practices and cultural exchange dynamics.
