Dr. J T Welsch is a Lecturer in English and Creative Industries at the University of York's Department of English and Related Literature since 2016. His academic journey includes roles as Head of Creative Writing at York St John University and teaching at the Open University and University of Manchester. He holds a PhD in Creative Writing from the University of Manchester, preceded by degrees from Berklee College of Music, Royal Holloway (MA Screenwriting), and Royal Holloway (MA Creative Writing).
His research bridges creative industries and 20th/21st-century poetry, focusing on publishing economics, migration narratives, and the intersection of creative and professional practices. Key works include the monograph *The Selling and Self-Regulation of Contemporary Poetry* (2020) and the anthology *Wretched Strangers* (2018), co-edited with Ágnes Lehóczky. Current projects include *How Many Loves* (exploring 19th-century artists) and a limited-edition *Flora & Fauna* (2022), hand-printed via Thin Ice Press.
Welsch directs York's Centre for Modern Studies and co-founded Thin Ice Press, a letterpress studio. He oversees the MA in Culture and Thought Since 1945 and supervises practice-led research in creative writing, digital literature, and queer writing. His external engagements include BBC Radio contributions, poetry performances at festivals (Ilkley, Manchester), and collaborative projects with regional institutions like Shandy Hall.
