Professor J Robert G Williams holds the position of Professor of Theoretical Philosophy at the University of Leeds, part of the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science. He has been at Leeds since 2005, progressing from Lecturer to Reader and then to Professor. His expertise spans Metaphysics, Formal Epistemology, Philosophy of Mind and Language, and Philosophy of Logic and Mathematics.
Williams studied Mathematics and Philosophy at Oxford (undergraduate and BPhil) before completing his PhD on the Inscrutability of Reference under Crispin Wright at the Arche Research Centre, St Andrews. His research focuses on topics such as reference magnetism, social ontology, probability models, and the philosophy of mathematics. He leads the ERC-funded 'Group Thinking: New Foundations' project and has supervised numerous PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.
He has secured significant grants, including an ERC Consolidator Grant (2019-2024) and multiple Marie Curie Fellowships for collaborators. Notable students include Mirja Holst (Wolfgang-Stegmller-Preis winner for her thesis) and Laura Crosilla (specializing in constructive mathematics).
Williams teaches advanced courses in philosophy of language, logic, and metaphysics. Outside academia, he is an avid fell runner and member of the Bingley Harriers and Bob Graham Club.
