Dr. Thomas Brouwer is a Lecturer in Theoretical Philosophy and Research Development Officer at the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science, University of Leeds. His research focuses on social ontology, philosophy of logic, metaphysics, and metasemantics. He has been affiliated with major projects like the ERC-funded Group Thinking: New Foundations and contributed to the Nature of Representation project. Previously, he worked at the University of Aberdeen on the AHRC project The Metaphysical Basis of Logic.
Education: PhD (University of Leeds, 2013), supervised by Robbie Williams and others; MA and BA (Leiden University, Netherlands). He advises on research funding applications and supervises PhD students in social ontology. Current roles include membership in the International Social Ontology Society steering committee.
Research interests include social facts' origins, logical constraints, collective agency, and two-dimensional models of social reality. His work bridges metaphysical and social ontology, exploring topics like counterfactual reasoning, cultural relativity of social facts, and norms/conventions. Recent publications address inconsistency in social facts and hybrid collective intentionality.
He collaborates across institutions, including Aberdeen and Leiden, and has held postdoctoral roles linking logic and metaphysics. Teaching includes occasional modules in social ontology-related areas.
