His research centers on philosophical logic, philosophy of mathematics, metaphysics, and philosophy of language, with a particular focus on abstractionism, plural logic, the nature of infinity, and Fregean semantics. Linnebo’s work investigates the ontological status of mathematical objects, the logic of plural reference, and the philosophical implications of potential versus actual infinity. He employs a broadly Fregean methodology, connecting metaphysical questions to logical and linguistic analysis.
His recent publications and books, such as The Many and the One and Thin Objects, have significantly advanced debates on plural logic and abstractionism. His article 'Actual and Potential Infinity' was recognized as one of the ten best philosophical articles of 2019. His research projects include the ERC-funded C-FORS and the RCN-funded 'Infinity and Intensionality', reflecting his sustained engagement with foundational issues in logic and metaphysics.
Linnebo has received several major honors:
- ERC Advanced Grant (2022) for C-FORS
- Nansen Prize for Excellence in Science (2022)
- University of Oslo Research Prize (2023)
- Member of Academia Europaea and the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (since 2014)
He has served in academic leadership roles, including Head of Research at IFIKK (2021–2023) and member of the Department Board (2013–2020). He is an editor of the Bulletin of Symbolic Logic and serves on the editorial boards of Inquiry, Philosophia Mathematica, and SATS. His research group, Logic at the University of Oslo, fosters collaboration in philosophical logic and related fields. He has supervised numerous graduate students and continues to lead cutting-edge research on the intersection of logic, metaphysics, and intentionality.
