Iwao Hirose is a Professor at McGill University, with a joint appointment to the Bieler School of Environment. He has held visiting positions at institutions including Université Catholique de Louvain, University of Tokyo, and Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His primary role is in the Philosophy Department, focusing on normative ethics and the philosophy of social science.
Research interests include axiology, distributive justice, and the application of ethical theories to public policy. He has published influential monographs such as Moral Aggregation (2015) and Egalitarianism (2015), and co-edited volumes like The Oxford Handbook of Value Theory (2015). His current work addresses measurement in ethics and a second edition of Egalitarianism.
Recipient of the Kitty Newman Memorial Award (2018) and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (2019), Hirose also leads projects on pandemic ethics and healthcare rationing. He maintains active collaborations through visiting fellowships and holds the Canada Research Chair in Value Theory and the Philosophy of Public Policy. Teaching focuses on ethics and moral philosophy.
