Avia Pasternak is an Associate Professor of Political Philosophy at the University of Maryland, College Park, and previously held positions at University College London (2013–2024), the University of Toronto (2023–2024), and Stanford University. She specializes in political theory, focusing on collective responsibility, citizen obligations in unjust democracies, and the ethics of violent protest. Her research explores questions such as whether citizens should bear responsibility for their state’s wrongdoings and the moral permissibility of violent resistance against injustice.
Education: D.Phil. in Politics from Oxford University (Nuffield College), MA and BA from Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Research Interests: Collective responsibility in democracies, duties of citizens in unjust states, ethics of violent protest, wrongful benefits, and moral philosophy. Key projects include her monograph Responsible Citizens, Irresponsible States (Oxford UP, 2021) and No Justice No Peace: The Ethics of Violent Protests (forthcoming 2025). Recent work examines the moral standing of unjust states and the justification of sanctions.
Awards: British Academy Senior Fellowship (2018–19), Rockefeller Visiting Faculty Fellowship at Princeton University (2019–20).
Teaching: Focuses on global ethics, contemporary political philosophy, and democracy. Courses include ‘Democracy, Authority, and Resistance’ and ‘Ethics of War and Peace’.
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with institutions like the Princeton University Center for Human Values and co-edits volumes on protest ethics.
