Paul Billingham serves as Associate Professor of Political Theory in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford, and is a Tutorial Fellow at Magdalen College. His academic career began with a BA in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Queen's College, Oxford, followed by an MPhil in Politics: Political Theory from Lincoln College, and culminated in a DPhil in Political Theory from St Anne's College. He joined Magdalen College in 2018 after serving as a Junior Research Fellow at Christ Church, Oxford (2015-2018).
Professor Billingham's research centers on the intersection of political theory and religious belief, specifically examining how state actions should relate to citizens' religious convictions within liberal democracies. His work explores the constraints religious pluralism places on state justification through public reason theories, while also investigating permissible state responses to illiberal religious practices. A secondary research focus addresses ethical dimensions of online public shaming, particularly regarding social media's role in enforcing moral norms.
His publication record demonstrates consistent scholarly output across top political philosophy journals, with recent work analyzing civic friendship's relationship to public reason, religious arguments in democratic deliberation, and the morality of online shaming practices. These publications reveal a methodological commitment to bridging theoretical political philosophy with contemporary governance challenges.
Professor Billingham teaches undergraduate courses including Introduction to the Theory of Politics, Theory of Politics, and Advanced Paper in Theories of Justice. At the graduate level, he contributes to the MPhil in Politics (Political Theory) program and supervises doctoral research. His teaching reflects his research expertise in political liberalism, religious freedom, and contemporary political ethics.
