Ivan Norscia is an Associate Professor in the Department of Life Sciences and Systems Biology at the University of Turin. His research focuses on the evolution of animal and human behavior, with emphases on social play, mimicry, emotional contagion, and primate communication. He teaches courses such as 'Antropologia e Genetica' and 'Eco-etologia umana,' and serves in academic roles including Erasmus coordinator for the LM ECAU program. Norscia’s work spans ethological studies across diverse species, exploring how social behaviors like play and mimicry reflect evolutionary and emotional processes. His recent publications analyze play dynamics in elephants, gorillas, pigs, and primates, highlighting the functional and communicative roles of facial expressions and social interactions.
Research interests include the evolutionary roots of human behaviors like smiling and laughter, observed through comparative studies with bonobos and gorillas. He investigates stress mitigation strategies in domestic animals and post-conflict social dynamics in both human and non-human groups. Norscia contributes to conservation and welfare through ethological analyses of habitat impacts and husbandry practices.
