Dr. Iva Zovkic is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM), specializing in Behavioural Neuroscience. Her research investigates neurobiological mechanisms through which transient experiences produce persistent behavioral changes, with a focus on memory formation and epigenetic regulation.
Education:
- B.A. in Psychology from Brock University
- Ph.D. in Psychology (Behavioural Neuroscience) from Brock University
- Postdoctoral fellowship in Neurobiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham
Research Focus: Dr. Zovkic's laboratory examines how nucleosome composition and histone variant exchange (particularly H2A.Z) regulate cognitive processes. Key research areas include:
- Epigenetic control of memory consolidation in hippocampus and cortex
- Coordination of histone variants with DNA methylation and post-translational modifications
- Systems consolidation of memories from recent to remote storage
- Chromatin remodeling in neural plasticity and behavioral adaptation
Publication Trends: Her recent articles (2013-2019) demonstrate a consistent focus on epigenetic mechanisms of memory formation, with particular emphasis on histone variant exchange, chromatin remodeling in learning, and neurobiological basis of fear/PTSD. The majority employ rodent models and molecular techniques to examine neural plasticity across multiple memory stages.
