Italo Milton Brown, MD MPH is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he also serves as the Health Equity & Social Justice Curriculum Thread Lead since 2020. A board-certified Emergency Physician, Dr. Brown has established himself as a leader at the intersection of emergency medicine, health equity, and social justice. His work extends beyond traditional academic medicine through his role as Chief Impact Officer of T.R.A.P. Medicine, a barbershop-based wellness initiative focused on the physical and emotional health of Black men and boys.
Dr. Brown completed his medical education at Meharry Medical College in 2015, followed by an Emergency Medicine Residency at Jacobi Montefiore Medical Centers in New York in 2019. He furthered his expertise with a Fellowship in Social Emergency Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine in 2020 and became board-certified in Emergency Medicine in 2021. His educational background at Meharry, a historically Black medical school, has profoundly influenced his commitment to addressing healthcare disparities.
Dr. Brown's research focuses on critical areas at the nexus of emergency medicine and social justice. His work examines racial disparities in medical leadership, develops innovative training methods to address racism and discrimination in healthcare settings, and creates community-driven health interventions. He has pioneered approaches to leverage community partnerships, particularly through barbershops as cultural hubs for wellness among Black men. His scholarship consistently addresses how systemic racism manifests in healthcare delivery and medical education, with particular attention to emergency medicine contexts.
