Professor Ishaq Kundawala serves as Professor of Law and holds the Southeastern Bankruptcy Law Institute & W. Homer Drake Jr. Endowed Chair in Bankruptcy Law at Mercer University School of Law. He joined the faculty in Fall 2021 and served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs during the 2023-2024 academic year. Prior to academia, he practiced bankruptcy law for over five years at top firms including Baker Botts L.L.P. in Dallas, Texas, handling complex cases involving billions in claims such as the $1.5 billion toxic tort resolution for a major copper producer.
His educational credentials include a B.A. from Austin College and J.D. from Tulane Law School, complemented by a clerkship with the Chief Bankruptcy Judge for the Northern District of Texas. He teaches Bankruptcy, Contracts I and II, Secured Transactions, and Law of Lawyering while mentoring students through Mercer's consumer bankruptcy externship program.
Professor Kundawala's research centers on Bankruptcy Reform and Legal Ethics, with scholarly work aimed at clarifying complex legal concepts for practitioners. He has developed an innovative pro bono externship enabling students to represent consumer debtors, bridging academic theory with real-world practice in bankruptcy proceedings.
His professional recognition includes being named a 'Rising Star' by Texas Monthly and Law & Politics during his private practice years, highlighting early-career excellence in Texas legal circles.

Beyond academia, Professor Kundawala maintains an active bar license in Texas and Georgia, frequently contributes legal commentary on national and local media regarding bankruptcy and contract law, and continues pro bono advocacy through initiatives like the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program where he represented distressed women in divorce cases.
