Isabelle Thireau

Isabelle Thireau serves as Professor of Sociology at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS) in Paris and holds the position of Research Director at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). She maintains a primary affiliation with the Center for Studies on Modern and Contemporary China (CECMC – CCJ), a joint research unit dedicated to interdisciplinary analysis of Chinese society.

Her research program centers on the sociology of norms, justice perception mechanisms, and intermediary public formations in China, grounded in extensive ethnographic fieldwork across Guangdong, Anhui, Beijing, and Tianjin. She investigates how public gatherings emerge as spaces for negotiating social order, examining the interplay between spatial configurations, communication practices, and normative frameworks in urban Chinese contexts. Her methodological approach combines micro-sociological observation with macro-level institutional analysis to reveal how citizens navigate social expectations in public spaces.

Recent publications demonstrate consistent analytical focus on public gatherings in urban China, revealing how individuals manage co-presence through subtle communication strategies and spatial positioning. Her 2020 monograph and 2021 China Quarterly article establish a theoretical framework for understanding "intermediary publics" – transient collectives that operate outside formal political channels yet shape social norm evolution. This body of work challenges Western-centric public sphere theories by documenting context-specific Chinese practices of publicness.

Within the CECMC research center, Thireau collaborates with a multidisciplinary team of anthropologists, political scientists, and historians focused on contemporary China. Her field-based methodology has established new protocols for ethnographic research in sensitive urban environments, influencing both area studies and sociological methodology.
