Isabel Shutes

Dr Isabel Shutes is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Her research focuses on migration, citizenship, care, and inequalities, particularly examining how migration policies intersect with social rights and labor dynamics. She teaches courses such as SP335 Migration: Current Research, Critical Approaches and SP400 International Social and Public Policy. Shutes holds a Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2023–24) for her work on care worker integration in migration systems.

Her expertise includes transnational social protection, gendered dimensions of migration, and the role of civil society in addressing migration crises. She has conducted research funded by the ESRC, European Union, Leverhulme Trust, and Nuffield Foundation. Key publications explore immigration policies affecting migrant women, mobility in social policy, and care work in aging societies.
