Dr. Isabel Baca is a Professor of English and Director of the Bilingual Professional Writing Certificate Program and Community Writing Partners at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). She holds a Ph.D. from New Mexico State University. Her work bridges academia and the community through service-learning, bilingual education, and workplace writing initiatives. Dr. Baca focuses on community literacy needs, mentoring Latinx students, and advancing bilingual communication in professional settings.
Research Interests: Dr. Baca explores service-learning integration across curricula, bilingual writing pedagogy, and the challenges faced by second-language learners. She emphasizes community engagement, particularly through the Community Writing Partners program connecting students with non-profits in health, literacy, and advocacy. Her work highlights the intersection of language attitudes, cultural identity, and educational equity in border communities.
Awards and Grants: She received the NEH Grant (2024), CCCC Advancement of Knowledge Award (2021), and multiple teaching accolades including the UT Regents' Outstanding Teaching Award (2017). Her funded projects include initiatives to strengthen border narratives and K-12 educator training.
Advising & Programs: Directs UTEP's Bilingual Professional Writing Certificate and oversees internships placing students in community organizations. Teaches technical writing, workplace communication, and online courses. Advocates for students' home language rights and applied learning through service.
Labs/Teams: Leads Community Writing Partners, partnering with over 20 nonprofits. Co-directs the Bilingual Professional Writing program, fostering multilingual workplace readiness. Active in mentoring Latinx scholars and promoting inclusive education practices.
