Professor Irmgard Schweiger is a faculty member at Stockholm University's Department of Asian and Middle Eastern studies, specializing in Chinese language and culture. She holds a Ph.D. in Modern Chinese Studies from Heidelberg University (Germany), focusing on 1980s-90s Chinese literary discourse about urban culture. Her research explores cultural memory, historical trauma, and transnational literary dynamics in modern Chinese and Taiwanese contexts.
Research interests include cosmopolitan vs. vernacular literary traditions, counter-narratives to state discourse, diaspora literatures, and gender studies. Current projects analyze Taiwan's future-oriented memory narratives and Sinophone cosmopolitan memory practices within a nationwide research collaboration led by Stefan Helgesson. She also investigates visual/ literary responses to China's 'China Dream' political narrative and trauma representation in contemporary Chinese literature/film.
Teaching emphasizes community-based learning and civic responsibility. Professional activities include co-founding the Sino-German 'Artists in Residence' cultural exchange program and leading the Stockholm Spotlight Taiwan initiative. No specific awards are mentioned, though her work contributes to critical cultural studies discourses.
