Irina Timofte

Irina Timofte is an Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, specializing in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. She joined UT Southwestern in 2021 after serving as faculty at the University of Maryland, where she earned a Master's in Epidemiology and Clinical Research.

Her research focuses on improving lung transplant outcomes through noninvasive diagnostics (cell-free DNA, microbiome analyses) and novel immunosuppressive regimens (belatacept, inhaled cyclosporine, sirolimus). She has led NIH-sponsored clinical trials and reorganized lung transplant programs to enhance efficiency.

Recent publications highlight her work in molecular rejection detection, donor-derived cell-free DNA applications, and advanced lung disease management. She serves as Program Director for UT Southwestern's Lung Transplant Fellowship, mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows.

A member of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, Dr. Timofte's clinical expertise spans pulmonary fibrosis, COPD, interstitial lung disease, and critical illness. Her contributions include protocol development, transplant volume growth, and enhanced graft monitoring techniques.
