Irene de Jong is a Full Professor of Ancient Greek at the University of Amsterdam, elected to the Academy of Europe in 2007. Her academic journey includes a PhD research scholarship from NWO (1984–1988) and prior roles as a teacher of Classics and research assistant in Greek language. She has held continuous academic positions at the University of Amsterdam since 1988, including research fellowships and postdoctoral roles.
Her research focuses on Classics, with expertise in Ancient Greek literature, philology, and textual analysis. She is particularly recognized for her scholarship in literary criticism and mythology, contributing to the interpretation of classical texts.
