Irene Giviashvili is an Affiliated Researcher at the Chubinashvili National Research Centre of Georgian Art Studies and Heritage Preservation. Her primary affiliation is as a Freelancer associated with the Georgia Project. She holds a PhD in Art History from the Chubinashvili Institute of Georgian Art Studies (2005) and a diploma in Art History from Tbilisi State University (1993). She has been a lecturer at Tbilisi State University, Tbilisi Academy of Arts, and the University of Bilkent, Ankara. In 2017, she served as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Oxford. Her academic trajectory includes a fellowship at the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz (2010) and co-direction of the 2019 Summer School 'Tao-Klarjeti: History and Heritage' with Gerhard Wolf and Ekaterina Gedevanishvili.
Her research focuses on medieval Georgian art and architecture, particularly the Kingdom of Georgia's 10th-11th century zenith. Key themes include cultural encounters in Anatolia, Byzantine and Islamic art influences, and the architectural heritage of monastic sites like Oshki, Khakhuli, and Parkhali. She investigates the interplay between Georgian religious architecture and neighboring cultural spheres, emphasizing cross-border artistic exchanges.
Her work combines historical analysis with modern challenges like heritage preservation and digital transformation. Collaborations span institutions such as the Max Planck-affiliated Florenz Institute and international scholars. She specializes in portable art objects (e.g., the Khakhuli Triptych) and monastic foundations' global contexts, particularly Mount Athos connections.
