Dr. Irene Gammel is a Professor of English and Director of the Modern Literature and Culture (MLC) Research Centre at Toronto Metropolitan University. She holds a PhD from McMaster University and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Her research focuses on modern literature, visual culture, avant-garde women, and the recovery of marginalized women’s narratives. Gammel has authored or edited fourteen books and over fifty peer-reviewed articles, including landmark works like Baroness Elsa: Gender, Dada, and Everyday Modernity and Looking for Anne of Green Gables.
Her academic leadership includes directing the MLC Research Centre, which hosts exhibitions, symposia, and workshops. She is a pioneer in experiential education, training students through immersive research methods. Gammel’s work bridges literary studies with fashion, performance art, and trauma narratives, reshaping fields like L.M. Montgomery Studies and feminist autobiographical theory.
She has served on editorial boards for journals such as Avant-Garde Studies and Fashion Studies, and chairs major conferences like MSA Toronto 2019. Her awards include the Canada Research Chair in Modern Literature and Culture (2005, renewed 2011).
