Ioannis Tsekos

Ioannis Tsekos is a Professor in the Department of Biology, School of Sciences at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. His research career, spanning more than four decades (1968–2012), has centred on the cell biology and ultrastructure of red algae, with landmark contributions to the understanding of cellulose biosynthesis, the organization of photosynthetic membranes and the development of reproductive structures in marine Rhodophyta.

Tsekos has employed advanced electron-microscopic techniques—notably freeze-fracture and high-resolution cytochemistry—to dissect the spatial and temporal dynamics of cell-wall deposition, Golgi-apparatus differentiation and membrane-associated terminal complexes involved in cellulose microfibril assembly. His studies on carposporogenesis in genera such as Porphyra, Gracilaria, Gigartina and Chondria provide a detailed blueprint of the cellular events underlying spore formation in red algae.

Parallel investigations have explored the ecophysiology of marine macro- and micro-algae in Greek coastal and inland waters, assessing seasonal biomass variation, eutrophication impacts and heavy-metal stress responses. Collectively, his work integrates structural, biochemical and environmental perspectives, yielding a comprehensive portrait of algal cell biology.
