Dr. Alison Sherwood is a Professor in the Department of Botany at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa School of Life Sciences. She leads the Algal Biodiversity Laboratory, focusing on Hawaiian algal systematics, biodiversity, and evolutionary relationships. Her research spans freshwater, marine, terrestrial, and airborne algae, emphasizing mesophotic zone species and invasive species dynamics. Key collaborators include NOAA, Bishop Museum, and international researchers. Recent work includes describing new algal genera/species, genomic studies of invasive Chondria tumulosa, and NSF-funded mesophotic genomics projects. She advises graduate students and postdocs in marine biology, botany, and phycology. Her lab actively engages in public outreach, including the acclaimed 'Voice of the Sea' documentary series and Year of the Limu initiatives.
- Key Affiliations: UH Mānoa, NOAA Pacific Marine National Monument, Bishop Museum
- Key Projects: Hawaiian mesophotic algae biodiversity surveys, invasive species genomics, coral reef algae impacts
Research interests integrate traditional ecological knowledge with modern genomics, addressing both basic phylogenetics and applied conservation challenges. Lab activities include fieldwork in remote Hawaiian reefs, molecular lab techniques, and global collaboration networks.
Recent publications highlight new species discoveries in genera like Psaromenia, Anunuuluaehu, and Amalthea, alongside impactful work on Chondria tumulosa's ecological spread. Awards include a Telly Award for science communication and recognition for mentoring undergraduate researchers.
