Ioannis Trougakos is an Adjunct Professor at the School of Sciences of the European University Cyprus (EUC), specializing in the Systems Biology of Ageing & Cancer. Previously, he served as an Assistant/Associate Professor at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) and held research roles at the National Hellenic Research Foundation. He holds a PhD in Biology from NKUA (1997) and a BSc in Biology from the same institution (1990).
His research focuses on cellular stress responses, proteostasis, and aging mechanisms, with notable contributions to understanding proteasome dysfunction, Nrf2 signaling, and anticancer drug mechanisms. Key areas include the role of herbal compounds in tumor cytotoxicity and the interplay between metabolic pathways and aging.
Dr. Trougakos has published over 90 peer-reviewed articles, achieving an h-index of 31 and over 10,000 citations. He has secured funding as Principal Investigator (PI) for EU projects like MediHealth, TASCMAR, and national grants such as PlantUp-GR. His work bridges academia and industry, with collaborations involving Onyx Pharmaceuticals and Korres.
- Awards: Invited lectures at international conferences, editorial roles in Redox Biology, and recognition for research highlights in journals like Aging Cell.
- Grants: Over 10 EU and national grants, including funding from the Greek GSRT and EU H2020.
He is actively involved in grant reviewing for global agencies (EU, Czech Republic, Netherlands) and founded the Hellenic Medical Society for Cancer Biology and Therapy. His research emphasizes translational applications in aging and cancer, leveraging systems biology approaches.
