Professor Ingrid Sharp is a leading scholar in German Cultural and Gender History at the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies, University of Leeds, within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures. She is a full-time Professor whose research and teaching focus on gender, war, revolution, and feminist activism. She has held multiple leadership roles including Subject Leader for German, Director of Postgraduate Studies, and currently serves as Deputy Director of Research and Innovation.
Her academic background includes a PhD from the University of Leeds, an MA and BA in German and Philosophy from St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford, and a PGCE from the University of York.
Her research centers on Gender and Cultural History, with a focus on feminist campaigns, anti-war activism, the aftermath of war, and revolutionary women. She examines how crises catalyze gender norm renegotiation and how women represent themselves in cultural and political contexts. Her work bridges history, gender studies, and cultural representation, emphasizing ethical motivations and transnational networks.
The 15 most recent publications reflect a consistent trajectory in German and European gender history, particularly around the First World War and revolutionary periods. They explore themes such as women’s political cultures, pacifism, cultural memory, performance, and transnational feminist solidarity. The research combines archival depth with interdisciplinary methods, drawing from history, literature, theatre, and art.

She has supervised numerous PhD and MA students on topics including gender and trauma, resistance to war, pacifism, and cultural representation. She has led externally funded projects with the AHRC, Heritage Lottery Fund, and international partners including the Peace Museum Bradford and Imperial War Museum. Her current mentorship includes Leverhulme Early Career Fellows on emotional appeals in political writing and the history of 'Die Gleichheit'.
She is an active member of research groups such as Women+ in German Studies, the German Studies Association, and the Association of German Studies. She contributes to public and academic discourse through international keynotes and public lectures, and is involved in collaborative research networks across Europe.
