Ingrid Baumgärtner is a Senior Professor of Medieval History at the University of Kassel, where she has held academic positions since 1994. She is a leading scholar in medieval legal and cultural history, with a focus on Germany, Italy, and the Mediterranean world. Her work bridges interdisciplinary themes such as social space, cartography, and intercultural exchange.
- Education: Doctorate in university and educational history (1983, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich) with a focus on the Middle Ages; Habilitation in Medieval History (University of Augsburg, 1992).
Research Interests center on medieval law, urban history, and the role of cartography in intercultural knowledge transfer. She has led major DFG-funded projects on court proceedings in late medieval cities, comparative studies of Lübeck, Cologne, and Constance, and the cross-cultural exchange of medieval maps between Western Europe and the Muslim world.
Scientific Awards & Fellowships include Visiting Professorships at the University of Pittsburgh, Research Fellowships at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton), Stanford University, and Villa I Tatti, as well as a Heisenberg Fellowship from the DFG.
Baumgärtner has held significant administrative roles, including serving as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences (2009–2011) and Vice-President of the Centro Tedesco di Studi Veneziani (2009–2013). She remains active in academic governance through memberships in the DFG-Fachkollegium 102, the Martin Buber Society of Fellows (Jerusalem), and other scholarly boards.
