Dr. Sebastian Weil is a Research Associate in the Department of Medieval History at the University of Kassel. He previously worked as a Lecturer and Research Associate at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) from 2018 to 2023 and was involved in the DFG-funded project 'Man Rent or Land Rent'. His current research focuses on medieval city history, Scotland and the British Isles, and the persistence of smaller cities during the Middle Ages.
- Doctorate (2022) from JGU Mainz, with a thesis on spiritual rule in the Dioceses of Aberdeen and St. Andrews (1380–1513)
- MA in History and BA in American Studies from JGU Mainz and the University of Glasgow
His research interests explore how medieval small cities navigated autonomy, growth, and pragmatic literacy in regions like the Ortenau, Franconia, and Lake Constance. He investigates their historical perception, agency, and geographical influences on their development.
