Prof. Dr. Inga Hense is a Professor at the University of Hamburg, affiliated with the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences and Department of Biology. She serves as Deputy Head of the Institute of Marine Ecosystem and Fisheries Sciences, focusing on marine ecosystem modeling with emphasis on plankton dynamics, biogeochemical feedbacks, and climate system interactions. Her work spans idealized process studies to regional 3D models.
- Key research areas: phytoplankton life cycles, nitrogen fixation, harmful algal blooms, and marine biota's role in climate via biogeochemical processes
- Collaborations: Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, Marine Research Centre Helsinki
Recent publications analyze phytoplankton light absorption's climate feedbacks, cyanobacteria life cycle dynamics in the Baltic Sea, and adaptation mechanisms under global warming. Her modeling work has implications for carbon cycle understanding and climate projections. Findings highlight nonlinear interactions between marine ecosystems and atmospheric CO2 concentrations.
