Prof. Ineke Braakman is a Professor of Cellular Protein Chemistry at Utrecht University's Faculty of Science. Her research focuses on protein folding mechanisms, molecular chaperones, and the cellular biology of cystic fibrosis (CFTR) and viral proteins. She holds a PhD from the University of Groningen and completed postdoctoral training at Yale University. Braakman has advised over 30 PhD students and supervised numerous BSc/MSc projects. She is an EMBO member and has served on over 130 national and 10 international thesis committees. Her roles include Vice-chair of the Sector Plan Committee for Science and Technology and Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board at the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut. Braakman's work spans protein quality control, viral envelope glycoprotein folding, and CFTR-related pharmacology.
Research interests include: protein folding pathways, ER quality control, CFTR dysfunction mechanisms, and therapeutic interventions for cystic fibrosis. She has contributed to understanding HIV envelope glycoprotein assembly and SARS-CoV-2 variants. Braakman has organized over 10 international meetings and served on boards for institutions like NWO (Dutch Research Council).
Her recent articles highlight advancements in CFTR folding, HIV protein dynamics, and redox biology. Braakman leads the FLOW project (Gravity grant), managed by Ilse Pool, and collaborates on cancer and stem cell research. Her lab is located at the Hugo R. Kruytgebouw in Utrecht.
