Indra Sekhar Sen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth Science at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. He holds a PhD in Geochemistry from Florida International University, USA (2010), an M.Sc. in Applied Geology from Jadavpur University, India (2003–2005), and a B.Sc. in Geological Sciences from Jadavpur University, India (2000–2003).
His research focuses on isotope geochemistry to study chemical interactions between Earth's surface environment and anthropogenic/natural processes affecting freshwater chemistry and biogeochemical element cycling. Key methodologies include stable, radiogenic, and non-traditional isotopes.
Research Trends: His work spans Himalayan glaciers, Ganges River systems, and Third Pole environmental dynamics, emphasizing trace element transport, meltwater contributions, and cryosphere-climate linkages. Recent publications highlight biomass-derived organic carbon impacts on glaciers, flood resilience strategies, and isotope-based water source analysis.
Scientific Awards:
- 2021: Batch of 1970 Young Faculty Fellowship
- 2020: Young Scientist Award (Ministry of Earth Sciences, India)
- 2013: INSPIRE Faculty Award
- 2009: Doctoral Evidence Acquisition Fellowship (USA)
Editorial Roles: Associate Editor for Geophysical Research Letters (2021–present), Vadose Zone Journal (2021–present), and Editorial Advisory Board, Environmental Science and Technology (2021–present).
