Indira Mysorekar, Ph.D., is Professor of Medicine and Chief of Basic and Translational Research at Baylor College of Medicine, holding the E.I. Wagner Endowed Chair. She earned her B.S./M.S. from Lund University and Ph.D. from Washington University School of Medicine (2002). Her research examines host-pathogen interactions in urinary tract infections, viral placentopathies, and cancer-associated inflammation.
Research focuses on molecular mechanisms of Zika virus vertical transmission, age-related bladder immunology, and endometrial microbiome influences. Work combines murine models with human tissue analysis to investigate placental barriers, tertiary lymphoid neogenesis, and hormonal modulation of immunity.
Publications demonstrate expertise in reproductive infectious diseases with recent emphasis on SARS-CoV-2 placental pathology and hormonal interventions for recurrent UTIs. COVID-19 research includes placental renin-angiotensin system alterations during infection.
Major Funding:
- NIH/NIA: Interleukin-6 and aging effects on bladder immunity
- NIH/NICHD: Mechanisms of Zika maternal-fetal transmission
- RADx-UP: STOP-COVID19 pregnancy outcomes study
Dr. Mysorekar directs translational programs in obstetric infectious diseases and urogenital immunity.
