Dr Malcolm Starkey is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Immunology at Monash University's School of Translational Medicine. He leads the Urinary Tract Immunology & Microbiology Research Group and directs the Bladder and Kidney Health Discovery Program. His work focuses on urinary tract infections (UTIs), cystinuria, and the interplay between immunity and chronic diseases. Dr. Starkey holds an Honorary Senior Lecturer position at the University of Newcastle and advises Chronic UTI Australia and Travere Therapeutics.
Education: PhD in Immunology and Microbiology (University of Newcastle, 2014), Bachelor of Biomedical Science Honours (University of Newcastle). Postdoctoral training at Imperial College London, followed by NHMRC and ARC fellowships.
Research Interests: UTI diagnosis/treatment innovation, cystinuria mouse models, mucosal immunity, and stroke-induced bladder vulnerability. Key projects include developing diagnostic tools, anti-inflammatory therapies, and preclinical treatments for cystinuria.
Grants/Projects: Active roles in 7 projects including PHASEK (phage-antimicrobial strategies), Travere Therapeutics collaborations, and NIH-funded studies on innate lymphoid cells. His work addresses UN SDGs like Good Health and Well-being (#3).
Awards: 21 prizes, including the American Thoracic Society Abstract Award (2017) and Newcastle Young Alumni finalist (2016). Contributions span UTI advocacy, rare disease innovation, and translational immunology.
