Dr Indira Banner is a Lecturer in Science Education at the School of Education, University of Leeds, Faculty of Social Sciences. She is actively involved in research and teaching, with a focus on student engagement, curriculum development, and social justice in education. She currently serves as Head of the Undergraduate Area within the School.
Her research interests include:
- Student participation in and attitudes toward education
- Curriculum and policy change
- Social justice in educational contexts
- Sociology of education
Dr Banner has taught on the Biology PGCE, leads the MA programme for practicing teachers, and teaches on the BA Education. She also supervises several PhD students.
She previously taught Science and Biology in secondary schools in Bradford for five years and holds a PhD in Plant Ecophysiology.
Her research outputs focus on educational reform, student engagement, and equity, reflecting a strong commitment to improving access and outcomes in science and mathematics education.
She supervises PhD students including Philip Yeung, Mardhiah Hanum Omar, and Samuel Lee. Though no specific grants are named beyond project funding, her work is supported by major bodies such as the Nuffield Foundation and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).
Dr Banner is affiliated with the School of Education’s research community and contributes to postgraduate research training and teacher development programs.
