Her academic journey reflects a deep commitment to cross-linguistic scholarship, having taught and published in both English and Afrikaans.
Her research interests center on stylistics, phonology, grammar, and literary theory, with a consistent emphasis on how comprehensive linguistic analysis provides the most reliable foundation for accurate text interpretation and evaluation. At UBC, she teaches an honors seminar on the linguistic analysis of poetry, undergraduate courses on stylistics and English language, delivered both on campus and online with a blended teaching approach.
Dr. Biermann's scholarly work demonstrates a sustained engagement with the relationship between sound and meaning in literature, particularly in poetry and postcolonial texts. Her publications span stylistic analysis of works by authors like Salman Rushdie and Can Themba, metaphor studies, intertextuality in South African poetry, and the phonetic dimensions of poetic language as seen in Gerard Manley Hopkins' sonnets.
Her teaching philosophy emphasizes the importance of linguistic precision in literary interpretation, believing that 'comprehensive linguistic analysis and description is the most reliable foundation for accurate interpretation and evaluation of any text.' This approach informs both her classroom instruction and scholarly research.
Dr. Biermann has been actively involved in academic publishing, serving as co-editor for conference proceedings and special journal issues focused on stylistics. Her bibliography reflects a career-long commitment to advancing the field of linguistic literary analysis across multiple cultural and linguistic contexts.
