Imogen Herrad

Dr. Imogen Herrad is a researcher at the Department of Ancient History, University of Bonn, and Editor and translator at the Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies (BCDSS) through December 2025. Her academic career at Bonn includes previous positions as Research Associate (2017-2018) and Teaching Assignments (2018-2019) in the Department of Ancient History.

Dr. Herrad's research focuses on Classical Sparta with special attention to political disobedience at officer level, Roman Women in Business and Law, and broader themes of transgression in the ancient world. Her dissertation project examined 'The politics of disobedience in classical Sparta' under Prof. Dr. Konrad Vössing. She has published extensively on Spartan-Perioikoi relations, rule-breaking in antiquity, and the representation of revolt in ancient literature.

Her recent publications demonstrate a trajectory from specialized historical analysis toward connecting ancient transgression studies with contemporary issues of power and language, as seen in her 2025 article on decolonizing academic English. Dr. Herrad's work consistently examines marginalized groups and non-conformist behaviors within rigid ancient social structures.
