Martina Gatto is a Research Fellow at the University of Rome Tor Vergata (2025–2028) and an Affiliate Researcher at the Norwegian Institute in Rome. She holds a PhD in Classical Antiquity and its Reception from the University of Rome Tor Vergata, with a focus on Lycurgus of Sparta in Greek and Latin literature. Her academic trajectory includes a visiting researcher position at KU Leuven (Belgium) and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland).
Her research interests encompass Spartan history, Greek historiography, and the reception of Sparta in modern contexts. Her current project, "The Heritage of the Spartan Mirage," explores how Sparta’s political ideal was reimagined in early modern Europe (15th–17th centuries). This work integrates approaches from ancient history, intellectual history, and literary studies to analyze translations of classical texts, political theories, and literary depictions of Sparta.
Education includes a BA in Classics from the University of Siena, an MA in Ancient Philology, Literature, and History from the University of Bologna, and a PhD from the University of Rome Tor Vergata. Her affiliations emphasize interdisciplinary engagement with classical antiquity’s legacy in modern thought.
